FARM ASS

Chelsea Culprit’s work uses representations of the body’s capacity for work, play, display, and expression.

Moving freely between the pictorial imagery of folk art and the materiality of the real world, Culprit’s works are composed of feelings as much as descriptions.

POLE ON BREAK

Working variously with painting, neon light, sculptural assemblage, and installation, Culprit's work uses a composite approach to translate the ideologies of female identity which are used to define the gender binary.

SILVER SHOES

“Two raucously colored, wall-spanning paintings repeat the motif of a bent figure grasping platform boots, rendered in a manner that calls to mind a seated Matisse.”

- Johanna Fateman (The New Yorker) .

“They seem to ask: if labour dictates value, and if gender, like labour, is performative work, what is the value of the effort that goes into putting on labour's performance? Is invisible work less just because it's invisible?”

- Kim Córdova (Art Review)
